Alex Ovechkin became the new King of NHL goals on April 6, 2025 after scoring the 895th goal of his career against New York Islanders.
Ovechkin has regularly credited his teammates for helping him Olie Kolzig Recently proven that these are not only empty words.
“I text to congratulations from the GR8 and he answers by telling me that I am part of his story,” Kolzig said in a viral tweet. “I’m like haha, you marked me once.
Kolzig recorded 17 points during his 17th anniversary in the NHL, passing or touching the washer before five of the 895 Ovechkin’s accounts. He is also one of the five capital guards to help on an OVI goal, joining Tomas Vokoun (1), Michal Neuvirth (1), Jose Theodore (1) and Braden Holtby (1).
The five Kolzig potatoes were assists and came during the road matches between 2005 and 2008.

October 20, 2005 – Ovechkin Career OBIT NO. 6
Kolzig’s first assist on a goal from Ovechkin occurred a little more than two weeks in the career of the young Russian. Ovi patinated through several defenders of Florida Panthers in the left wing before beating the goalkeeper Roberto Luongo on the right shoulder. Defender Steve Eminger received the main help – one of the 8 ovi goals he helped in his career.
The goal of the third period, the second in the Ovechkin match, came with 2:38 to play in the third period. But the attempted return of the capital would stop there, and they would lose 3-2.
Funny fact: Three years later, during the NHL 2008 recovery, Eminger was exchanged, with the 84th choice in total (Jacob de Serres), at the Philadelphia flyers for the 27th choice in total in the draft. This selection turned into John Carlson, one of the greatest defenders in the history of the capital and the player who helped the second most Ovechkin (158).

Kolzig’s second assist on an Ovechkin goal occurred eight days later – a defeat of 4-2 against the tampa Bay lightning. Ovechkin’s strike arrived at 3:25 in the first period, beating goalkeeper Sean Burke in semi-row at the bottom of the left wing. Shaone Morrisson recorded the main assistance.
January 12, 2006 – Ovechkin Career OBIT NO. 27
The third and last assist that Kolzig went during the recruit season of Ovechkin came against Dallas stars. Brian Sutherby hunted the washer in the middle of the ice where Ovechkin finally took possession and beat Marty Turco Short Side. The second period count was the only goal that the capital scored in the match, falling to the 4-1 stars.
Funny fact: Jason Arnott, which the capital would acquire years later on the deadline of 2011, marked twice in the game for the stars.

Kolzig’s next help occurred during the second season of OVI in the NHL. Ovechkin scored on Toronto Maple Leafs goalkeeper Andrew Raycroft in front of the net during a Capital Power Power 12:01 in the game. Alex Semin received the main assistance. Capitals beat the Leafs 3-2, also obtaining goals from Semin and Dainius Zubrus. The Hockey Hall of Famer Mats Sundin scored twice in the third period.
March 5, 2008 – career objective Ovechkin no. 151
Kolzig’s final aid on a goal from Alex Ovechkin occurred during the 2007-08 campaign – the last year of the goalkeeper with the caps before spending a season with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ovechkin scored a goal of escaping on the goalkeeper of Buffalo Sabers Ryan Miller after Kolzig combined with the other capitals of the Grand Backstrom to quickly move the washer of the team’s defensive area. The first period count marked the 53rd of the Ovi season. He would add a second goal, his 54th, in the third period. The capital beaten the 3-2 sabers. Backstrom scored the winning goal.
Eight months later, Kolzig would make his final contribution to the pursuit of Ovechkin, abandoning a goal to the superstar of the capital in the third period of a capital match on November 10, 2008. Capitals won 4-2.
The goal made Kolzig, at the time, the 55th different goalkeeper Ovi had bumpy the string. Seventeen years later, this list swelled in 183 when Ovechkin beat Ilya Sorokin for career goal. 895.
Ovechkin’s record also came in Kolzig’s 55th anniversary.
