The Denver Nuggets made major changes on Tuesday, dismissing the director general Calvin Booth and the head coach Mike Malone who both helped the franchise to win his first title about 22 months ago. The coach and GM have been behind the scenes for some time and the team hoped that doing things like that could push the team to another championship.
The reactions flocked to the news, but as usual the coach of the Boston Celtics, Joe Mazzulla, had the most unique, thoughtful and rather dark vision of the question. Speaking with the press before his team’s match against the New York Knicks, Mazzulla said that the dismissal of Malone had made him consider his own mortality.
Joe Mazzulla on Michael Malone pulling: “Every day, I remember my own mortality, and I think that is what keeps me in a perspective and a gratitude of the opportunity you have.”

“I mean, that is part of what motivates me, but I wake up every day by saying that it could be my last day,” said Mazzulla. “You must have this type of perspective. Because it gives you gratitude. It also keeps you hungry. You must have a healthy balance of yourself, as long, you can at the same time that you are very replaceable because that’s how it works. So every day I remember my own mortality and I think that is what keeps me in a perspective and a gratitude that you have.”
There is no one like Joe Mazzulla when it comes to making something deep is both disturbing and a little hilarious at the same time. May we all try to stay so centered.
