The House Republicans immediately move to punish the Texas Democrat who was withdrawn from the Chamber of the Chamber for having repeatedly disrupted President Donald Trump’s speech.
GOP representative Daniel Newhouse officially presented a resolution of censorship against representative Al Green, who was withdrawn by the chamber sergeant in Arms after getting up and shouted during the first minutes of Trump’s speech in the Congress. Speaking on the grounds of the House, Newhouse, a Republican of Washington’s state, said that he was asking for a sanction against Green – an official conviction formerly considered rare in the Chamber of the Chamber – for his “numerous interruptions” of the President’s speech.
“It was beyond the pale. It continued, disturbing all evening, so I thought it was necessary to answer, “said Newhouse about Green’s interruption. “We have to maintain the expectations of decorum here, if not, what are we?” We have nothing more than a simple club than everyone comes and shouts. »»
It is a great moment for Newhouse, a centrist of the GOP who previously attracted the anger of some in his party for having voted to dismiss Trump in 2021 and has not paid little attention to him since he survived a competitive election against another republican cycle.
But Newhouse’s maneuver – which seems to be blessed by the leaders of the GOP in the Chamber – has angry certain conservatives of the Chamber, who had been in talks with a legislative lawyer on their own resolution, according to several people involved in the drafting of the competing resolution. They argued in private that Newhouse was just trying to avoid a challenge from her right. Apart from the Capitol, several republican campaign agents are moving from Newhouse as a sign that he will not retire this cycle – as some have wondered in private – after pushing a final cycle of the six -point gop challenger.
Newhouse, however, denied that he was trying to strengthen his position among Trump supporters.
“This is the House of Representatives, Congress and respect for the rules of the decorum we have. You know, it could be any president, any member. It is bigger than any special relationship, “Newhouse told journalists.
Chamber officials expect the measure to be favored, which would give it special procedural powers which force him to receive a vote on the ground within two legislative days. The Republicans expect the vote later on Wednesday, but it has not yet been decided, according to people familiar with the plans.
Green said on Wednesday that he was not angry with the speaker, the chamber officer or the members bringing the resolution, saying to journalists: “I will undergo the consequences.”
“But I have to add this: what I did was from my heart. People suffer. And I was talking about Medicaid. I didn’t just say you didn’t have a mandate. I said you didn’t have the mandate to cut Medicaid, “he said.
The head of the House minority, Jeffries, told CNN on Wednesday early Wednesday that the “overwhelming majority” of the Democrats had approached the speech with seriousness. Asked about the Republicans who wanted to censor green and if that is appropriate, Jeffries said only: “I did not have this conversation with anyone.”
Democrats do not plan to whip the members against the resolution of censorship, allowing legislators to vote as they wish, according to a person familiar with the issue.
For some centrist democrats, the vote of censorship places them to the point of defending the explosions of another member during the president’s speech. Green was not the only one to have organized a demonstration: several other progressive democrats came out, shouted to the president of their seats and held signs, despite the advice of the party leadership to remain restricted in their response to keep the accent on Trump and his program.
The House Freedom Caucus announced on X earlier during the day they were writing a resolution, because another member, the representative Troy Nehls, worked to offer a competing resolution. (Nehls has his own beef with the Freedom Caucus, who left the group during a spit last year.)
The ultra -conservative group had publicly warned the Democrats that they would deposit censorship resolutions against all members who disrupted the speech.
“Our colleagues should be noted that the veto of the heckling will not be tolerated,” they wrote.
Newhouse recognized that there were “a lot” of republicans interested in putting their names on the resolution. As for his role, he said: “I was the first to approach the speaker of this issue. So, I’m here.
