Despite the last -minute concerns expressed by Greece, EU countries have agreed to end imports of Russian aluminum.
Russian products downstream of the metal have already been blocked and the European Commission has proposed in this package to also prohibit primary aluminum. A certain import threshold would always be authorized for a certain time, before a complete prohibition starts later.
Particularly absent from packaging is a complete ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). A group of countries had put pressure on the EU executive to prohibit the energy source, worried about a recent increase in EU purchases.
But the problem was taken in the now commercial negotiations which only starts with the administration of the American president Donald Trump, Brussels who hold the goal of the Russian LNG until he potentially concludes an agreement to buy more LNG American.
