A man who threatened to hurt himself was detained at the Del Coronado hotel on Saturday evening after the police evacuated certain customers and placed the complex on “modified locking”, said Coronado police.
The department received a call on Saturday around 7:20 p.m. from a man who said he had a firearm, experienced a mental health crisis and was suicidal. The police were unable to determine its exact location before hanging up, said Coronado police in an article on Facebook.
The dispatches tried to recall several times. They were finally able to use the mobile phone location data to determine that it was close to the main pool. Coronado police said they were helped by a San Diego police helicopter and canine units.
After searches the region, the police located the man on a balcony overlooking the swimming pool, but he refused to cooperate, police said. After what was called “prolonged effort”, the man was placed in police custody and then in the hospital to be assessed.
No weapon was found. He was not a guest recorded at the hotel.
Police said the man had not threatened to harm others. Nor was he an active shooter, who, according to the ministry, was a disinformation broadcast on social networks.
