Salmonella can present a risk for animals and humans. Pets infected with salmonella may have symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. In some cases, pets may only show a decrease in appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected pet can also be carriers and transmit bacteria to other animals or humans. Animal owners are invited to contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the product recalled and has symptoms.
Humans handling contaminated pets are also in danger, especially if they do not carefully wash their hands after contact. Symptoms in humans may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. In rare cases, salmonella can lead to more serious conditions such as arterial infections and arthritis. People with symptoms after handling the product should consult a doctor.
The Department of Agriculture of North Carolina collected product samples on January 8, 2025, and the food and drug protection laboratory of the North Carolina Ministry of Agriculture confirmed the presence of Salmonella. The FDA informed Blue Ridge Beef of the positive test result on January 27, 2025.
The recalled products were distributed between January 3 and 24, 2025 and were sold mainly in retail stores through Virginie, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee and Rhode Island.
Consumers are invited to make the product instead of purchase or to have it in a way that prevents access to children, pets and wildlife. The recalled product should not be sold, given or nourished to animals. Pet food bowls, cups and storage containers should be washed and disinfected, and the hands must be carefully cleaned after handling the recalled food.
