Gov. Ron DeSantis said Tuesday afternoon that Florida could see a record amount of snow in the Panhandle over the next 24 hours as a rare winter storm hits the state.
DeSantis said forecasts call for 2 to 4 inches of snow in the hardest-hit areas, but it’s possible there could be localized accumulation of up to 6 inches.
While this isn’t the first time North Florida has seen snowflakes fall to the ground, it has been a long time since one has been seen. This lots of snow.
Timeline: When will snow and ice arrive in our area? Here is a detailed overview
“I had my guys go back and look at the historical record, and we never accumulated six inches in Florida based on the information we had. So that’s something that would be very, very remarkable,” DeSantis said during the news conference at the State Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee.
Thirty-two years ago, according to the Florida Climate Center, a 1993 “superstorm” produced up to 4 inches of snow along the Florida Panhandle on March 12.
Before that, 71 years ago, record snowfall was reported at the Milton Experimental Station. That’s when the state record of 4 inches over 24 hours occurred on March 6, 1954, in Santa Rosa County.
