How much snow will fall in Houston? | Winter Weather Update

Confidence increases in Houston’s winter weather. Travel will be difficult, if not impossible.

HOUSTON — The chance of accumulating snow in Southeast Texas has increased over the past few days. Different computer models agree better on this possibility. Based on this latest information, the KHOU 11 weather team has created a first official forecast for this storm.

Areas likely to experience the least snow will be located along the immediate coastline. Snow totals here could be reduced due to issues with sleet and rain mixing. Additionally, temperatures near or just above freezing will compress any snow that falls, resulting in lower totals.

Along I-10 and through the city of Houston, a general height of 2 to 3 inches is possible, with higher amounts likely north of the interstate and lower amounts likely south.

As you head further north – Montgomery County, Polk County, Walker County and San Jacinto County – you might see between two and four inches, with the highest totals north and east toward Jasper .

Please note, this snowfall total is still likely to vary depending on the evolution of the storm.

Calendar-wise, winter weather will begin Monday evening. The maximum impact of the snow will be Monday night into Tuesday morning and will decrease Tuesday afternoon.

While snow and sleet are likely in the area, we also have a chance of ice. Ice accumulations are expected to remain below the threshold causing widespread power outages, but could be enough to leave a glaze on roads and tree branches, according to meteorologist Pat Cavlin.

Impacts on travel

Travel impacts are expected to be profound from this storm. Roads will become dangerous and covered in snow, and hundreds, if not thousands, of flights will be canceled. When that winter storm hits, you want to be where you’ll be Monday night. These impacts will be felt until mid-week.
