Elon Musk continues his campaign to promote the hard right in Europe as the EU investigates X, his controversial social media platform.
Elon Musk continues his campaign of support for European far-right parties, including AfD candidates in the run-up to the German federal elections, with regular messages of support published on X.
In his final message on Saturday, he said: “From MAGA to MEGA: Making Europe Great Again.”
“Make American Great Again” has long been the rallying cry of Donald Trump, who is further to the right than any Republican president in the United States in living memory, according to political scientists.
It was also the slogan of the Hungarian presidency of the EU in 2024, of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, considered a far-right populist by political scientists.
Elon Musk’s slogans have angered many political leaders in Europe, and this week the EU retaliated by stepping up its investigations into X’s algorithms.
On Thursday, the European Commission requested documents relating to X’s “recommendation systems” that suggest to users what they might want to read next on the platform.
“Today we are taking further steps to shed light on whether X’s recommender systems comply with DSA obligations,” said Henna Virkunnen, Executive Vice President for Technology Sovereignty, Security and Democracy.
In response, Musk calls himself a champion of free speech and democracy and accuses European leaders and other critics of trying to limit them.
In August 2024, the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a US human rights and civil liberties group, found that Musk’s “false or misleading claims about the US election” had nearly 1,000 views. 2 billion times on
