The Danish prime minister said last week that she had asked to speak to Trump but had not yet received a response. At the time, she assured that there was “no reason to believe” that Trump was actually planning to invade Greenland.
Frederiksen told Danish news channel TV2 in an interview following his call with Trump that their conversation “confirmed” that “there is great American interest in Greenland.” This call does not appear to have concluded the issue, with both leaders agreeing to continue the dialogue.
Trump has not spoken publicly about the call, choosing instead to repost on social media the results of a 2019 poll that found 68% of Greenlanders supported independence from Denmark.
During their 45-minute conversation, Frederiksen also “highlighted the importance of strengthening security in the Arctic” and reminded the former reality TV host of the strong trade relations between the two countries and more broadly between the United States and the EU.
The two leaders also discussed ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as relations with China.
