Eva Longoria and her foundation are donating $1 million to help those affected by the fires currently raging in Los Angeles.
Longoria is supporting the Latino Community Foundation – led by Julián Castro – as well as the California Community Foundation with funds intended to address the immediate needs as well as the long-term recovery of those affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires. Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate since the fires broke out on Tuesday, destroying many homes and businesses and killing 24 people so far.
The old Desperate housewives The star’s $1 million donation comes from the $50 million Jeff Bezos Courage and Civility Prize he was awarded in March, as part of Amazon’s annual Founder’s Prize given to people who contribute significantly to society. Longoria only has 10 years to find a worthy charitable cause to spend the money on, and it appears that supporting LA’s post-fire recovery is his first course of action.
Longoria previously posted on her Instagram that she would donate $50,000 to the charity This Is About Humanity’s efforts to support frontline workers, farmworkers, day laborers and families affected by the wildfires; in the coming days, she will also be volunteering with the Global Empowerment Mission to package and distribute fire relief supplies to the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, as well as visiting the World Central Kitchen operation supporting victims and first responders responders to the Eaton fire.
The star’s Eva Longoria Foundation, a nonprofit she founded in 2012, provides Latina women and girls with educational programs, scholarships, mentorships, microloans and other support.
