The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southwest Japan.
The quake struck shortly after 9:19 p.m. local time (7:19 a.m. ET), the agency said, triggering an advisory for Miyazaki province on the island of Kyushu as well as Kochi prefecture in southern Japan. .
Authorities urged residents not to enter the sea or approach the coast until the advisory is lifted, the country’s weather agency said on X.
