Keir Starmer has become the fifth British prime minister to pledge to make the UK “a world leader” in artificial intelligence, following a long list of previous promises from governments that have largely failed.
Rishi Sunak has announced plans to make the UK a world leader in AI, particularly AI security, by November 2023.

As early as 2014, David Cameron spoke of, external making the UK a world leader in the “Internet of Things” – a loose term used to refer to connected technology into which the government has integrated AI.
Despite its ambition, the UK has yet to create a well-known AI company. All the innovations, whether generative AI, large language models or driverless cars, have been led by the United States and China.
According to many rankings, the UK is third in AI innovation and the latest assessment from Stanford University’s Human Centered AI Center places the country well behind the US and China and just above India.
