Bayern Munich demolished Club Brugge in a match that quickly went smoothly for the unstoppable Bavarians. Lennart Karl, 17, scored in less than five minutes and Harry Kane doubled the advantage in the 15th… and the rout was on.
Here’s who stood out from the result.
Jersey exchange: Nordin Jackers
Thirteen shots on target and “only” four goals. It’s a good day at the office for the Club Brugge goalkeeper, amid a team bombardment. There is no doubt: Bruges was controlled and overwhelmed from the start. Jackers was called into action time and time again and the 28-year-old had to be smart with his decisions to deny Bayern’s big guns their 1v1 opportunities. He wasn’t the only one keeping the scoresheet cleaner than it could have been as his defense cleared a clearance or two off the line.
Overall, it was exactly that kind of day. The Belgian team made forays with the ball and actually achieved an impressive 94% passing accuracy. But they really never came close to getting into the game.
Brugge were not completely helpless and shot up the pitch in an attempt to get things going against the Bavarians. A first-half chance looked set to come when a Brugge striker made his way 1v1 past the last man – but that man was Jonathan Tah, who stayed alert and pushed the ball away in some excellent defending.
Tah is quickly progressing into his role as a key starter in Kompany’s XI, despite only joining the club this summer. This is considered one of the German international’s best matches.
Footballgott: Konrad Laimer
We’re going to think outside the box today. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović both had excellent games in Bayern’s center – key passes, creating chances, constantly being on the ball and influencing the game, and spotting long balls from each of them. What Laimer did was grab two assists while being all over the pitch, as the converted midfielder turned right-back turned left-back. Julian Nagelsmann’s presser has become Vincent Kompany’s key man. He’s not quite in the engine room that is Bayern’s midfield, at least not nominally, but me Gott, he is everywhere.
Take a bow, kid! The youngster received official UEFA MOTM honors on his Champions League XI debut and showed from kick-off that he was not intimidated by the occasion. If there’s one thing that defines Karl’s game, as we’ve seen all preseason, it’s moxie. Karl is not at all shy about trying something, and so when he received a cross from Jonathan Tah in the fifth minute, he passed up all his passing options to sneak into the congested central areas of the Club Brugge defense before snatching one from distance. Ridiculously bold – and it went in!
This confidence will serve him well and should certainly give him more and more chances to play this season. Karl spent the rest of the match dancing around Club Brugge, sidestepping, stepping over, stepping over again… all while showing some composure in maintaining possession and passing it on to his attacking teammates. Oh, and go back and make forceful defensive interventions.
It’s a joy to watch and Bayern are lucky to be able to see a lot more of it soon.
Master of the match: Luis Díaz
Díaz was now a force to be reckoned with on the left flank. His landmark goal in the 34th minute sealed the match – in case there were still any doubts at that point – and it wasn’t his first good chance to hit the net. But aside from the scoresheet, the Colombian winger posed problems. On Bayern’s fourth and final goal, he showed that Harry Kane wasn’t the only Bayern striker who could work magic from deep, launching a change of field to release Konrad Laimer en route to Nicolas Jackson’s goal. Díaz was unlucky not to have at least one assist on this one as well.
It was 81 minutes of relentless energy from Bayern’s biggest summer signing, and Lucho seemed to get stronger and stronger as the match progressed. It rightly leads the way for our awards tonight.
And what do you think of this move, by the way? Tight angle, 0.05 xG by Sofascore. Superb shot.
