Since the rise of AI, employees across industries have started to worry about their future job prospects. Positions that many thought were safe, like software developers, musicians, actors, and lawyers, are starting to look like jobs AI can handle.

As new technologies disrupt the job market, many want to know which jobs are safest. These 10 roles all require a human presence to operate, making them the safest choices, according to a Microsoft study.

Current trend: Suze Orman’s secret to a wealthy retirement: Did you invest that money?

Phlebotomists

Phlebotomists are trained professionals who draw the blood of others. Their work requires careful needlework to collect blood and ensure the safety of the person they collect it from. Although it is possible for AI-controlled robots to perform this type of operation in science fiction films, the magnitude of physical differences between people makes it difficult to automate and minimize pain. Many patients may also feel uncomfortable or scared without someone nearby to comfort them.

Auxiliary nurses

Nursing assistants cover all types of roles in the healthcare sector. These can range from recording vital signs to providing emotional support to helping elderly, sick or disabled patients bathe, dress and carry out daily tasks. These tasks require a mix of judgment, adaptation, and strength that current AI models lack. Similar to phlebotomists, nursing assistants establish a human connection that helps calm patients.

Hazardous materials removal workers

Workers involved in hazardous materials disposal must recognize and dispose of radioactive waste ethically. This might seem like a perfect job for AI-powered robots, as it would keep humans out of harm’s way. However, human judgment is often required to find the most efficient way to dispose of materials in complex environments without posing safety concerns.

Painter and plasterer helpers

Generally speaking, blue-collar jobs are less affected than white-collar jobs with the rise of AI. Helpers, painters and plasterers are skilled craftsmen who repair walls and ceilings. They must secure or fabricate materials, prepare and clean the environment, and follow safety regulations. This job is difficult for AI due to the many types of challenges, such as cracks and uneven surfaces. Humans are also more flexible in countering these problems.

Embalmers

After a person dies, an embalmer cares for their body to temporarily prevent decomposition. Additionally, they may apply cosmetic procedures to improve the person’s appearance. Death is a delicate subject, which makes human empathy an essential part of working with grieving families to organize proceedings.

Plant and system operators

Plant and system operators are responsible for chemical machinery and processes in chemical plants and water treatment sites. They perform tasks such as monitoring machines and instruments, operating equipment, and controlling chemical processes. These tasks can be complex, with significant security, financial and legal consequences if errors are made.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dental surgeons who solve problems related to a person’s face, mouth, neck, and jaw. Procedures can range from cleft lip repair to dental bone grafting to tooth extraction. AI cannot replace humans when it comes to surgical intervention due to unpredictability and variation between patients.

Automotive window installers and repairers

Auto glass installers and repairers replace and repair automobile windshields and windows. Common tasks include removing scratches with primer, cleaning windows, and installing new windows and windshields. The fragility of the glass and the different vehicles can pose problems for the AI. Many workers also move around on site, such as on the side of a road or in a driveway, making work impractical for AI-powered robots.

Naval engineers

Naval engineers operate, maintain and repair a ship’s mechanical and electrical systems. They are responsible for making sure everything runs smoothly and resolving potential issues before they cause problems. They have to manually repair the ship’s machinery with various complex physics tools, which would pose a problem for the AI.

Tire repairers and changers

This job requires workers to repair and replace tires. To do this, they must use hydraulic jacks to lift the vehicles, then disassemble and reassemble the wheels using various tools and wrenches. These repairs may need to be done on the side of a highway or in a cramped garage, making humans a better option than AI.
