President Donald Trump said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed in a lengthy phone call Thursday to meet in Budapest, Hungary, to discuss how to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Trump also said Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other “high-level advisors” would meet with their Russian counterparts next week to set the stage for his summit with Putin. Trump did not say when he planned to meet Putin.
Trump detailed his call with Putin in an article for Truth Social.
The call came a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump are scheduled to meet at the White House, as kyiv seeks more U.S. support in its war against Russia.
“President Zelensky and I will meet tomorrow, in the Oval Office, where we will discuss my conversation with President Putin, and much more,” Trump wrote in his social media post.
“I believe that great progress has been made through today’s telephone conversation.”
Trump said earlier this week that he was considering sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine to increase pressure on Russia to end the war.
