Earlier this year, dog rescue charity Happy Doggo received a call about a puppy in Thailand who desperately needed their help. The puppy was hanging out at a construction site in the jungle and construction site officials were about to get rid of him – by any means necessary.
When Happy Doggo’s rescue team arrived, they found the puppy curled up under a bush. As they tried to gently bring her out, she hid from them.
“She ran away from us and crawled under that sheet metal,” Niall Harbison, founder of Happy Doggo, said in a video for The Dodo.
As rescuers got a closer look at the puppy, they realized it was missing one of its back legs. It was hard to tell if she was born with three legs or if she had been injured at some point. Regardless, this discovery made everyone even more determined to save the dog.
Eventually, Harbison and the rest of the Happy Doggo team were able to retrieve the terrified pup. As they carried her back to the rescue, she began to relax a little. They could tell that she seemed to enjoy gentle human contact.
“She’s a very, very nervous dog,” Harbison said. “But she likes to be held.”
Harbison decided to name the dog Candy in homage to her sweet personality. After Candy received the medical care she needed, Happy Doggo staff and volunteers focused on helping Candy come out of her shell.
It didn’t take long for Candy to start feeling a lot more comfortable. In just a few weeks, she had transformed into a cuddly, lively puppy who had all but forgotten about living alone in the jungle.
“She quickly became the most affectionate and playful dog,” Harbison wrote on Instagram.
Six months later, a Spanish family decided to adopt Candy. Her new owners love taking her to the park and the beach, where Candy sprints at breakneck speed. Her zooms are so powerful that she often outstrips her new brother, Fletcher.
“He’s a speed demon,” Harbison said. “Turborocket!” »
At the end of the day, when Candy is finally tired from running around, she returns to a warm bed in a loving home. After everything Candy has endured, it’s the least she deserves.
