Kevin Federline says Britney Spears spent the night before their 2004 wedding on the phone with her ex Justin Timberlake.
“The day before our wedding, we were at the Fairmont in Santa Monica, in one of the bungalows, and I was like, ‘What’s wrong?'” Federline said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight published Tuesday. “I thought she was talking to her mom on the phone or something. Maybe she was having doubts.”
Federline said he was shocked by Spears’ admission: “She told me she was on the phone with Justin, and I just cringed like, ‘Did I just hear that right? What’s going on?'”
Representatives for Spears and Timberlake did not immediately respond to Weekly Entertainmentrequest for comment.
The rapper, also known as K-Fed, made these comments about Spears before the release of his memoir: You thought you knew. A rep for Spears previously criticized Federline for the book in a statement to EW.
“With the news of Kevin’s book breaking, once again he and others are taking advantage of her and unfortunately this comes after child support has ended for Kevin,” the rep said. “All she cares about is her children, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being during this sensationalism. She detailed her journey in her memoir.”

Federline said he “immediately” offered Spears an exit plan.

“Okay, we don’t have to do that,” he remembers telling the singer. “I didn’t care if we got married or not, and she told me, ‘No.’
The rapper said he was initially convinced by Spears’ explanation of why she called Timberlake.
“(She said) ‘I just wanted to make sure I got everything done. I want to make sure I say my last bit,'” he recalled. “I’m like, ‘Damn, the day before our wedding, this is what you decide to do?’ So at the time I kind of took it with a grain of salt and interpreted her explanation as, ‘Okay, maybe she’s closing a chapter in her life.'”

When asked if he thought Spears was still in love with Timberlake at the time of the call, Federline replied, “In love, I’m not sure. But not for that.”
Spears and Timberlake starred in The brand new Mickey Mouse club as children. In The woman in meSpears said she had an abortion while dating the “Take Back the Night” singer because “he didn’t want to be a father” and accused Timberlake of cheating on her repeatedly during their relationship, which lasted from 1999 to 2002.
After marrying in 2004, Spears and Federline had Sean Preston and Jayden James, and eventually divorced in 2007.
