Nine House Republicans have signaled to Speaker Mike Johnson that they have leverage to file a motion to remove him from office.
The rules of the House which will be put to a vote after the election of the President contain a provision which sets a threshold of nine members. for a motion to release the President.
In the previous Congress, the one-member threshold meant Kevin McCarthy lost his power.
On Friday, three Republican House members voted for someone other than Johnson on the first ballot. Two of the three later changed their vote to Johnson.
Six additional members also initially withheld their votes for Johnson before changing their votes at the end of the first round.
The strategy suggests that all nine members indicate they will have the power later in the year to send Johnson packing.
