Boxes filled with approximately $ 600,000 from Xanax were seized Wednesday evening by border patrol agents on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton, said customs and American border protection agents.
The seizure occurred after agents of the San Clemente station arrested a driver in a van on the highway around 4:50 p.m., agents said in a press release.
A canine unit searched the van and alerted its drug manager inside the vehicle, the investigators said. The agents said they had discovered in rear boxes 11 – or approximately 90,000 tablets – of individual Farmapram packets, whose American brand is Xanax. The drug is used to treat anxiety and panic disorders, but is also known to be very mistreated.
The driver, the drugs and the vehicle were returned to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The driver now faces allegations of possession with the intention of distributing a controlled substance.
