New Orleans educator has been teaching for nearly 60 years

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week and a local educator celebrates almost 60 years in the classroom. Mrs. Sylvia Crier is celebrating her 57th Teacher Appreciation Week. She is the oldest public high school teacher in New Orleans. She is a teacher known for having exceptional attendance, helping students stay within the uniform code, and encouraging them to engage in the political process once they turn 18. She started her career in the classroom in 1964. She taught through hurricanes, pandemic and so on. many other challenges along the way. She currently teaches at McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School. She has been honored in many ways over the past few decades, including winning the New Orleans Excellence in Teaching Award in 2016. The Orleans Parish School Board surprised Crier with a big party for her 80th birthday in 2020.
