A transgender woman who was convicted of rape in 1998 when she was a man was today jailed for nine years for stabbing another trans woman in the house they shared.

Zara Jade, 54, lacerated her victim in the arm and abdomen as she sat on her knee. She then used the leggings to strap her ankles, knees, chest, and arms to the electric chair before tilting her back and shutting off the power.

Bradford Crown Court heard how his victim remained fixed in place for a few hours in their shared flat in Halifax while Jade used his card to withdraw £300 before later untying it.

Jade pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery, fraud and forcible confinement.

The court heard that the defendant was currently transitioning and was referred to by the pronouns “she”.

Prosecutor Lydia Pearce today said the defendant had been drinking before asking for money at her shared flat.

She then attacked her victim – who was able to stem the bleeding from her “superficial” wounds with a rag – while demanding to know her PIN.

Police were contacted after a district nurse saw the complainant’s wounds heal during a visit a few days later and Jade was then arrested.

Assistant Circuit Judge Timothy Clayson heard that in 1988 Jade was locked up for five years for rape and other sex offenses.

He was also informed that in 2013 she was imprisoned again for another sexual matter.

Lawyer Richard Canning, representing Jade, said her main goal now was to complete her transition, adding that she knew what she had done was wrong.

He also said that Jade struggled with alcohol and made “bad decisions” while drinking.

Judge Clayson said Jade’s victim had serious health issues and was particularly vulnerable.

He also said the Complainant was helpless and unable to move or contact anyone after being tied to the chair.

The judge added that the next morning Jade apologized and said she felt mortified by what she had done.

He said the offenses showed the defendant was willing to behave in an “insensitive and cruel” manner towards a vulnerable victim.

He said her previous convictions were for serious offenses and he found her to be a dangerous offender.

Jade will now have to serve two-thirds of a nine-year prison sentence before being considered for release by the parole board.

It will then be subject to an extended license period of three years.

Judge Clayson also placed her under a 12-year restraining order, which prohibits her from directly or indirectly contacting the plaintiff.

The Justice Department declined to disclose whether Jade would be sent to a men’s or women’s prison.
