Five men, some with their hands tied and their heads covered, were found dead Monday on a Mexican road leading to Acapulco, a once-glamorous resort town now plagued by cartel violence.

Prosecutors in the southern state of Guerrero announced the discovery and said an investigation had been opened for “aggravated homicide.”

Local media reported that residents found the victims, four of whom had their hands tied. Reports indicate the men had various injuries.

Guerrero is one of the regions of Mexico most affected by violence linked to drug trafficking. Cartel conflicts have led to 1,890 murders in the state in 2023. The U.S. State Department advises Americans to avoid Guerrero altogether, citing crime and violence.

The bloodshed is increasingly affecting state elected officials, with two mayors assassinated in recent days, including one reportedly arrested from a bus and murdered near Acapulco.
