The owner of the 49ers of San Francisco, Jed York, made the headlines earlier this month when he described Brock Purdy as a quarter-Arrière of the NFL Top-10. The timing has raised the eyebrows, because the team is currently engaged in contractual negotiations with Purdy. Some have hypothesized that York’s comments could strengthen the quarter-back case at the negotiating table.
Friday, Matt Maiocco de NBC Sports Bay joined Knbr and was asked if the York comments may have negatively affected 49ers in the negotiations.
“I don’t think,” replied Maiocco. “I think Brock Purdy’s performance is what his team uses for these negotiations.”
Maiocco stressed that the Commentary on the quarter of the York Top 10 was partly based on Purdy’s adjustment in the Kyle Shanahan system and the talent that surrounds it in San Francisco.
An optimistic York also said: “I have everything and all the expectations that Brock will be a forty-niner for very, a very long time.”
Publicly declaring Purdy, a quarter of the top 10 will probably not significantly influence its market value. Most expect the new Purdy Agreement to exceed $ 51 million a year, a figure that the 49ers are preparing. This offseason, the team has separated from several key contributors to reduce future spending and make room for what should be the greatest contract in the history of the franchise.
Maiocco noted that Jalen Hurts of the Eagles of Philadelphia is currently classified as 10th quarter best paid, with an annual salary of $ 51 million, which suggests that this number could possibly serve as a reference for the Purdy Agreement.
Of course, Purdy’s camp can see things differently. After all, Hurts signed his agreement in 2023.
“Since then, the salary ceiling has increased dramatically,” said Maiocco. “And so, I am sure that the Brock Purdy team looks at him as:” Okay, it was $ 51 million, but that’s when the ceiling was there, so it represents this percentage of the salary ceiling, and this percentage of the salary ceiling is now so high. “It is therefore a back and forth.”
In 2023, the NFL salary ceiling was $ 224.8 million per team, which means that the salary of $ 51 million in Hurts represented around 22.7% of this total. The application of this same percentage to the current ceiling of 279.2 million dollars would lead to an annual salary just north of $ 63 million, exceeding the salary of the NFL of the Cowboys Dak Prescott.
If it is unlikely that the 49ers are so high, the comparison remains intriguing while the two parties continue to work towards a long -term agreement. Maiocco has expressed doubt that the final issue will reach $ 60 million a year, but could it reach $ 50 million?
“I doubt that too,” said Maiocco. “I think it must be there a few, but it’s still a lot of space. It is a duration of $ 9 million where this thing could integrate.”
Maiocco added: “When you have a player like that, who checks all the boxes and everyone likes, and he has been underpaid, I think something will do. I would be really surprised if it is not the case. And I think that, the team activities organized, when they would be done on the field, all that would probably be the moment when the two sides come together. “”
