While Ferrera made the headlines last year for her Oscar appointment for “Barbie”, the veteran of the industry began her career over 20 years ago, appearing in projects like “Real Women have curves”, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”, “Ugly Betty” and “Superstore”.
In 2007, she entered the story as the first Latina to win an Emmy during grande hours for the exceptional main actress in a comedy series for her role as Betty Suarez in “Ugly Betty”, E! The news reported. The same year, she also won a Golden Globe for the best actress in a television series – musical or comedy and Sag Award.
During her speech Golden Globes, Ferrera said: “Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing the show and this character who really brings a new face on television and such a beautiful message on beauty that is deeper than what we see.”
Ferrera has expressed diversity, or its absence, in industry throughout his career. In an interview in 2024 with the New York Times, she said that it brought her no joy at being the only Latina to win an Emmy in a category of head and that she hopes that Latinos will be able to have more opportunities in the industry.
“There are many things that are very transactional in terms of checking the boxes to claim diversity,” she said.
From the star of “Barbie”, she added, “one of the most exciting things about the film was, as a Latina woman, being invited to be part of something so adventurous and joyful and fun. Gloria is Latina, but being Latina was not her reason for being in this story.”
