3 New Jersey Places Made the ‘100 Most Charming Main Streets in America’ List

Three places in New Jersey made the list of America’s most charming main streets.

Organized by the online photo platform Mixbook, this list of the “100 Most Charming Main Streets in America” was compiled from a survey of 3,000 adults.

“The main streets of cities and towns across America are lined with unique shops, cafes and restaurants, forming the center of local culture and community,” the Mixbook website states. “These streets are more than just places to shop and eat: they are essential to the city’s identity, creating connections and memories for residents and visitors.”

The New Jersey list includes Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, Bridge Street in Lambertville and Washington Street in Cape May.

Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair

Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair comes in at No. 21 on the national list.

The avenue includes shops, cafes, restaurants, fitness centers and personal care places. Things to do along Bloomfield Avenue include seeing a movie at the historic Clairidge Theater, catching a show at the Wellmont Theater, and visiting the Montclair Art Museum. There are also events happening in the area throughout the year, such as the Montclair Film Festival and the Montclair Jazz Festival.

According to Mixbook, “This bustling street is full of shops and restaurants, while its Montclair Art Museum and annual Montclair Film Festival contribute to its bustling North Jersey charm.”

Rue du Pont, Lambertville

Bridge Street in Lambertville ranks 49th on the list.

Filled with history, this street along the Delaware River is home to numerous boutiques, galleries and antique stores. It is surrounded by historic sites such as the Lambertville House Hotel, the James Wilson Marshall House and the Lambertville Train Station, which offer lodging as well as a restaurant and wine cellar with river views. The historic train station also serves as a venue for weddings and other private events.

“This quaint street along the Delaware River is home to shops, galleries, and the Lambertville Train Station,” explains Mixbook. “Its proximity to New Hope, PA, its towpath, and its annual Shad Fest add to its quaint central New Jersey charm.”

Washington Street, Cape May

At 61st is Washington Street in Cape May, home to the beloved Washington Street Mall.

Serving as Cape May’s town square, the Washington Street Mall has more than 75 establishments, from restaurants to cafes, shops, bars, activities and more, scattered along Washington Street and its side streets. It’s all nestled around a three-block stretch closed to vehicular traffic, making the central area safely walkable.

According to Mixbook, “This charming Victorian street is filled with shops, restaurants, while its neighboring beaches, the Cape May Lighthouse, and the annual Cape May Music Festival contribute to its iconic Jersey Shore atmosphere.”

Main streets in New Jersey not making the top 10 include:

  • King Street, Charleston, South Carolina.

  • Main Street, Lake Placid, New York.

  • Main Street, Beacon, New York.

  • Main Street, Montpelier, Vermont.

  • E Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

  • Broughton Street, Savannah, Georgia.

  • King Street, Alexandria, Virginia.

  • Broadway Street/Biltmore Avenue, Asheville, North Carolina.

  • Washington Avenue, Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

  • Main Street, Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
