At least three people were killed and three others were injured in a shooting on Tuesday evening in the county of Spotsylvania, Virginia.
Around 5.30 p.m., the Sheriff Spotsylvania office received calls for an active shooter in the Olde Greenwich Drive and Boulevard Lafayette district and responded to find several people.
Three were declared died on the scene while three others were taken to the hospital, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
Currently, the deputies have not released the conditions, identities or ages of the victims.
Major Elizabeth Scott, spokesperson for the Sheriff of Spotsylvania, said at a press conference that the shooter had not been placed in police custody, and that the shooting may have been committed by more than one person.
“There are dozens and dozens of officers actively researching suspects and preserving the crime scene,” said Scott.
7news journalist Lianna Golden, told Wop that the witnesses on the spot described the shots sounding “like a machine gun” and that they had seen young men walking in the street with “rifles in hand”.
Officials have urged people to avoid the region and those close to the scene to stay inside while the authorities are investigating.
“We will stay here until the suspects are captured,” said Scott. “It’s probably as bad as possible.”
After the shooting, public schools in the city of Fredericksburg said that lessons would start two hours on Wednesday evening “in the light of the deep impact that this incident had on the members of our school community”.
“This delay will allow us the time necessary to prepare our buildings and our staff to welcome students with the care and support they may need during this difficult period,” the statement said.
A period of two hours has also been implemented in the public schools of the county of Spotsylvania for Wednesday, so adequate support can be set up for students and staff.
“Within the framework of this support, each of our high schools will have deputies and an additional presence of the Sheriff office,” reads a SCPS press release.
The authorities ask all witnesses to send a video that could help the investigation. Scott added that the department has deployed drones above the wooded area around the cul-de-sac, while they are looking for a likely armed suspect.
