Several school buses were involved in a crash in a Chicago suburb Tuesday morning, leaving nearly a dozen students injured, authorities said.
A multi-bus crash involving at least three school buses occurred just after 8:30 a.m. on northbound Interstate 55 at mile marker 246 in Grundy County, according to Illinois State Police.
Authorities said minor injuries were reported at the scene and 11 students were transported to area hospitals.
Morris Hospital confirmed two students were transported to their hospital, none in serious condition, while Silver Cross Hospital said four patients were transported to their emergency room.
Additional school buses were called to the scene “to facilitate the relocation,” state police said, noting the relocation site was The Loves Truck Stop on the east side of I-55.
Just before 10:30 a.m., police said all students were transferred off the highway.
Shortly after 11 a.m., Braidwood police said the students were safely returned to Reed Custer Middle School following the state police investigation.
“There will be a significant police presence at the college to assist with reunification,” Braidwood police said.
Meanwhile, the right lane of I-55 remained temporarily closed, police said.
