“3 Body Problem” renewed for season 2 by Netflix

Netflix will bring back – and even conclude – 3 Body Problem.

The streamer has given the green light to additional episodes that will eventually conclude the famous sci-fi epic from David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo.

“We are thrilled to be able to tell this story to its epic conclusion,” the showrunners said in a statement. “Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we could take the audience with us to the ends of the universe. Here we go!”

However, it is not yet clear how many seasons or episodes the order will entail. The showrunners previously hoped to have a total of four seasons to adapt the three books in Liu’s trilogy.

Furthermore, Game Of Thrones creators Benioff and Weiss have renewed their overall deal with the streamer to write, produce and direct new series and films. In addition to the pursuit of 3 Body Problemthey are currently working on the recently announced series Death by lightning. Their initial overall deal for 2019 was worth at least $200 million. Woo also has an overall deal with the streamer.

Peter Friedlander, vice president of scripted series at Netflix, added: “The extraordinary 3 Body Problem, brought to life by the skilled hands of Benioff, Weiss and Woo, will soar to heights never before seen as they tackle the remainder of the breathtaking journey through Death’s End. Their brilliant vision as storytellers is matched only by their incredible partnership – and, just like the fans, we can’t wait to see what they have in store.

The decision follows a period of suspense, whether they like it or not, after the first season of the expensive drama rolled out in May. After a somewhat modest first week, the series demonstrated that it had staying power, topping the Netflix TV rankings for three weeks and spending seven weeks in the Netflix Top 10 worldwide. 3 Body Problem initially garnered mixed reviews, its Rotten Tomatoes critic and audience scores gradually increased to 80 percent and 78 percent, respectively.

The show is reportedly one of the most expensive in Netflix history, costing more than $20 million per episode, not including the cost of acquiring the television rights to Liu Cixin’s novels and subsequently marketing them.

Producers said they are working on a second season as if a renewal is coming with hopes of starting as soon as they get the green light.

Benioff already said The Hollywood Reporter for a cover story that the second season of 3 Body Problem would be even better than the first: “Liu Cixin created this indelible trilogy and the books just keep getting better for me. The second book is much better than the first, and the third book completely blew me away. The story becomes more and more ambitious as it goes on, and it takes a big step forward in book two. So I feel like if we survive to season two, we’ll be in a good place.
