‘3 Body Problem’ Creators Clarify Mysterious Netflix Renewal Plan

One of the greatest 3 Body Problem The mysteries since the end of the show are: What exactly did Netflix’s renewal announcement mean?

During the streamer’s upfront presentation last week, Netflix promised “additional episodes” of the popular sci-fi drama to “finish the story.”

Of course, “additional episodes” could mean anywhere from two episodes to five seasons and, understandably, many fans were concerned that the ultimate answer would be too close to the first for comfort.

But showrunners David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo assure that everything will be fine (for the series, at least, if not for the characters in their ensemble drama facing an alien invasion). While the trio didn’t reveal the exact number of episodes in their new deal, they stressed that it’s “seasons” – plural – and that the number of hours matches their original plan. adapting author Liu Cixin’s two remaining novels into his Hugo. -winning trilogy.

“We knew from the beginning how many hours we needed to tell the rest of the story because we have a road map to the end,” Weiss said. The Hollywood Reporter. “And we have what we need to go through as originally planned.”

“By the time we finish the series, it will have been seven years since we spent on it,” Benioff added. “We’re at the point now where we can tell the rest of the story and, yes, we have enough time to tell the rest of the story the way we want to tell it and that’s extremely rewarding.”

The showrunners are currently writing the next season of 3 Body Problem. They spent four years working on the first season and have indicated that they plan to work on the remaining episodes over the next three years (so maybe they’ll end up doing two more seasons in a row, given that chronology, but this is purely speculative).

The eight-episode first season of 3 Body Problem topped the Netflix TV rankings for three weeks and spent seven weeks in the Netflix Global Top 10. The Rotten Tomatoes critic and audience scores gradually found themselves at 80 percent and 78 percent, respectively.

Benioff already said The Hollywood Reporter for a cover story that the second season of 3 Body Problem would be even better than the first: “Liu Cixin created this indelible trilogy and the books just keep getting better for me. The second book is much better than the first, and the third book completely blew me away. The story becomes more and more ambitious as it goes on, and it takes a big step forward in book two. So I feel like if we survive to season two, we’ll be in a good place.
