Three people were killed and three others were injured during a shooting in a residential street just outside Fredericksburg, Virginia on Tuesday, said the Sheriff of the county of Sptsylvania.
The authorities said that the shooting may have been carried out by more than one attacker and that no one had been placed in police custody. A reason was not immediately clear, but a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s office said that the shooting was not born from a domestic dispute.
The shooting was reported around 5.30 p.m. on Olde Greenwich Circle, a modest town hall street in the county of Spotsylvania at around 60 miles southwest of Washington, DC, said the sheriff’s office. People in the immediate area were invited to stay inside, and others were invited to avoid the area.
The ages of the victims were not known. The injured victims were taken to hospitals in the region, the Sheriff’s office said in a statement. A video of a passer -by showed what seemed to be two bodies covered with white leaves several meters from the other on the sidewalk outside a row of houses.
“We still have an active and in progress investigation without suspects in detention,” said Major Scott. Residents who live on or near the Circle of Olde Greenwich were invited to stay inside.
The public schools of the city of Fredericksburg said that the start of the lessons would be delayed by two hours on Wednesday, citing “the deep impact that this incident had on the members of our school community”.
Reports on the shooting attracted a strong police response. A video published on social networks showed that the officers were walking through a wooded area with their drawn weapons.
Andrea Staples, a receptionist in Strictly Ballroom, a dance studio in a shopping place near Olde Greenwich Circle, said that a student had called around 6.30 p.m. after leaving the class to alert them to the set and the adviser to Shelter-in-Place.
“I locked the door and went to check the back,” said Ms. Staples.
A class was in session at the time, she said, and the students sheltered up to around 20 hours
“We will be here all night until we find the suspects,” said Major Scott.
