A British diver has died while exploring a wreck off the coast of Albania.
The 29-year-old victim – an unnamed tourist – died while diving off Saranda, a southern resort town near the Greek island of Corfu, on Monday.
Police arrested the instructor responsible for the trip – locally named Saimir Kushova, 45 – on suspicion of breaking health and safety rules and employing someone who was not fully qualified.
Social media profiles show Kushova is an employee of the Spiranca Dive Center and has worked there for two decades.
He is a local and studied at a marine academy in his hometown.
A dive center employee told the Telegraph the victim was a qualified diver and denied that Kushova was responsible for her death.
They said: “She was diving on a wreck but was only at a depth of seven or eight meters. She rose to the surface but then came back down.
“We don’t know what happened, maybe she had a health problem.
“Saimir was arrested but he was the one who tried to save her, he gave her CPR.”
