29 Stories of People Stuck in Comas

16.

“I was in a medically induced coma (with induced paralysis of the whole body) for six weeks. There were a handful of times when I vividly remember where I “woke up” in my head. How was the experience?

“When I woke up in my head, I had no idea what had happened. So, I’m fully conscious, I know I’m me, but I can’t open my eyes, I can’t move a muscle, and I can’t speak. The first time it happened, it was terrifying. I started to panic and for a minute I thought maybe I was dead. Then I realized I was thinking, so it didn’t seem right. I tried to move and I couldn’t. I tried to speak and I couldn’t. I tried to scream and I couldn’t.

The next time this happened was when my best friend came to see me. Once again, I can’t move, I can’t see and I can’t speak. But when I “woke up” in my head, I could feel her holding my hand and asking me to shake it if I could hear her speak. I tried as hard as I could to squeeze my hand, and I felt like it was doing absolutely nothing. When she let go and walked away, I was completely devastated. I tried to yell at him to stay, but apparently nothing happened. However, I was so happy that people I knew were there wherever I was and that I was getting help (even though I felt completely helpless). That sort of helped. I had to calm down again so I could fall asleep again.

When I finally came out of the coma, my parents were there and it made no sense because my parents lived two states away at the time. I finally learned that they were there the whole time. They gave up everything in their lives and came to be with me and stayed there through this whole ordeal. After a few days (I think) some doctors came and asked me a bunch of questions. The first question was what year it was – I knew that because I remembered getting sick on New Year’s Eve, so I knew it was 2000. Next, who the president was. I responded to Clinton, so I understood. Then they asked me if I knew where I was. I definitely answered “Honolulu” because in my dreams I had been to Honolulu. When all their faces had that confused Scooby Doo look, that’s when I realized that wasn’t quite true, so I figured I must be back in Salt Lake City (from one way or another). They seemed very relieved when I suggested this. »
