One of the historic and lightest sports sites in Los Angeles and one of the most recent in the city will share the scene of the ceremonies of the Olympic Games in 2028.
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with Park and Sofi Stadium exhibition in Inglewood will host the opening and fence ceremony for the 2028 Olympic Games, it was announced on Thursday.
The opening ceremony on July 14, 2028 will be shared by the Colosseum and the Sofi Stadium. The closing ceremony is scheduled for July 30, 2028, at the Memorial Coliseum, which will become the first place in history to host events for three Olympic Games.
The Memorial Coliseum previously organized the Olympic Games scene in 1932 and 1984.
“The sites selected for the 2028 opening and closing ceremonies will highlight the rich sports history of Los Angeles and a advanced future, presenting the best that A to offer on the world scene,” said the president and president of La28, Casey Wasserman. “These two extraordinary places will create an unforgettable experience, welcoming fans around the world to Olympic and paralympic games like never before and concluding what will happen as one of the most incredible games in history.”
The paralympic opening ceremony on August 15, 2028 will be at the Sofi stadium, home of the Rams of Los Angeles and Los Angeles Chargers. The closing ceremony of August 27 will be at the Colosseum.
As for competition places, the 2028 Olympic Games plan became clearer last month when locations for more than a dozen sports, including Beach Volley, surfing and baseball, have been revealed. La28 presented its update list of the 2028 Olympic places to the International Olympic Committee, which signed last month on the updated plan.
Places for more sports were announced earlier, notably the Memorial Coliseum, the Sépulveda Basin Recreation Area, the BMO Stadium with Park Exhibition, the Los Angeles Convention Center and Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles, including canoe slalom and softball, which take place for Oklahoma City.
The medal event program for 2028 offers six new mixed gender team events in what the La28 organizing committee called a “monumental step”. The program approved for 2028 has 22 additional medal events as Paris 2024 at 351.
Mixed team events added for 2028 include artistic gymnastics, athletics (4×100 mixed gender relay), golf, archery (compound arc), coastal rowing beach sprint and table tennis. The competition format for the new artistic event of the mixed gymnastics team will be finalized and announced on a later date.
The medal competition includes extensions in the field of the female football and water polo event, a new category of boxing weights for women, an extended 3×3 basketball court and more medal events in swimming and climbing.
Football of flag will make its Olympic debut in 2028 and the butt will return to the programming of medal sports for the first time in more than a century. Baseball and softball will return Olympic, and cricket will also be part of the programming.
