Shortly after, the Tour of Piastri was the fastest after pumping in a 1m 12,760, putting it almost three tenths away from Russell. Ferrari, meanwhile, seemed to have a delicate session, with Charles Leclerc seen sliding during his flying race while Hamilton lingered in p11 to eight tenths of the rhythm.
Attentions turning to longer races during the last third of FP2, Piastri’s time remained at the top until the end of the session, the McLaren driver in mind Russell and Verstappen. The latter had a little time in the last minutes after taking a Leclerc tow – before the Ferrari accelerated to avoid running in the dirty air from another car, causing a sarcastic laugh of the Red Bull driver.
Norris, meanwhile, remained fourth at the moment identical to Verstappen, the Briton placing himself behind because of his turn later than the Dutchman. Leclerc was the Ferrari head in fifth, ahead of Antonelli in sixth and the favorite at home Alonso in seventh.
Pierre Gasly d’Alpine followed his appearance among the first 10 in FP1 by taking eighth in the second try, with the pair of Hadjar and Liam Lawson Bulls following the ninth and 10th respectively.
The winner of the Spanish Grand Prix of six times, Hamilton, had to settle for the 11th, while Nico Hulkenberg of Kick Sauber, Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull and the duo Williams of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon covered the 12th to the 15th. Behind them were the Aston Martin de Stroll (P16), Gabriel Bortoleto (P17) by Kick Sauber, Ocon (P18), Bearman (P19) and Colapinto (P20).
With the Friday race now finished, the drivers and teams will examine their data before returning to the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit for the third and last training session on Saturday at 1130 hours local, before qualifying later in the afternoon.
