2024 WNBA Rookie Tracking: Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and More
All eyes are on the WNBA playoffs with less than a month to go until the end of the 2024 regular season.
But the most anticipated draft class in league history also continues to draw attention. Caitlin Clark, April’s first overall pick, hopes to lead the Indiana Fever to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. And Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso also hope to lead the Chicago Sky to the playoffs.
Clark and Reese have already etched their names in the record books this season. Clark set the WNBA single-game record with 19 assists, and she is the first rookie in league history to record a triple-double. Reese set a WNBA record for consecutive double-doubles (15).
We will continue to track the rookies’ best performances each match day throughout the season.

The last time I went out: Clark scored 28 points, had 12 assists and had four rebounds Sunday in the Fever’s 100-93 win at Dallas. That gave Clark her fourth game this season with at least 25 points and 10 assists, the most in a season in WNBA history. Clark made 10 of 19 total shots and 5 of 11 three-pointers. Clark has scored 617 points this season in 33 games, the most points by a Fever rookie in franchise history. Hall of Famer Tamika Catchings’ previous record of 594 was set in 2002, when the WNBA had a 32-game regular-season schedule. The league expanded to 40 games last year.
What we learned: With the win over the Wings, the Fever (17-16) have beaten every WNBA opponent this season except Las Vegas. Indiana last lost to Dallas on July 17. The Fever will play the Wings and Aces twice more this month. – Michael Voepel

The last time I went out: Reese is the only player in the WNBA who can make a game with 19 rebounds seem routine. She also added 17 points, three assists and two steals in the Sky’s 79-74 loss at Minnesota on Sunday. Reese became the WNBA’s leading rebounder in a season — she now has 418 — and did it in fewer games (32) than the two players next to her on the list: Sylvia Fowles (404 in 2018, 34 games) and Jonquel Jones (403 in 2017, 34 games). Reese also broke the single-season record for offensive rebounds; after seven on Sunday, she has 165, surpassing Yolanda Griffith’s 162 in 32 games in 2001.
What we learned: The Sky have lost six straight games and are tied for the league’s worst record – 1-7 – since the WNBA resumed after the Olympics. Chicago and Atlanta, which beat Los Angeles on Sunday, are now tied at 11-21 for the eighth and final playoff spot. – Voepel

The last time I went out: Cardoso was another bright spot in the Sky’s loss to Minnesota, scoring a career-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 8-of-8 from the line. She added nine rebounds and one assist.
What we learned: While the Sky didn’t win, this game played out more like Chicago likes offensively than other recent games. The ball went largely to the rookie stars, with Reese and Cardoso shooting 13-of-27 and 13-of-13 from the line. Compare that to Friday’s loss to Indiana, where Reese and Cardoso shot 5-of-13 and 6-of-9 from the line. –Voepel

The last time I went out: After going scoreless in the first quarter, which left the Sparks trailing 25-12, Rickea Jackson finished with 13 points on 5-of-16 shooting (1-of-4 from three-point range) in Los Angeles’ 80-62 loss to the Atlanta Dream on Sunday. It was the 10th straight game Jackson has reached double digits in points, though coach Curt Miller was most pleased with her progression as a defender. The former Tennessee star also finished with four rebounds and three assists, second-most on the team, in the contest.
What we learned: The Sparks lost their 25th game of the season, a new franchise record. After recent surges by Washington and Dallas, Los Angeles is two games behind those teams in 12th place. But Jackson continues to be a bright spot in this tough summer, and on Sunday she joined legends Candace Parker, Nneka Ogwumike and Lisa Leslie as rookies to score 400-plus points with the franchise. Her 12.6 points per game this season is third-highest among rookies, behind Clark and Reese. –Alexa Philippou
