2024 Election Updates: Democrats Raise $27 Million After Biden Withdraws as Harris Support Surges

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, released a video statement Sunday explaining why she is supporting Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democratic nominee.

“She’s ready to take charge, bring our party together, take on Donald Trump and win in November,” Warren said in the video, in which she speaks directly to the camera.

“Kamala has been a fierce warrior on the issue of abortion and under Kamala’s leadership, we will restore Roe V. Wade to the law of the land,” Warren said.

“When you’re dealing with a convicted felon, who better to go after Donald Trump than a former prosecutor?” she continued. “I’m here for Kamala because Kamala has been here for the American people year after year.”

In an interview with ABC News Sunday night, major Biden donor and supporter John Morgan said that if Vice President Kamala Harris is the nominee, he will not fundraise for the Democratic ticket.

“It’s one thing to vote for somebody; it’s another thing to raise millions of dollars for somebody; you really have to be there,” Morgan, a prominent Florida attorney, told ABC News.

Morgan, who calls himself a “Biden/Manchin-type Democrat,” told ABC News that he fully supports Biden but believes Harris would be too far to the left and lose in November.

“If Trump World could pick someone to run against, I think they would pick her,” he said.

Morgan told ABC News that he had already informed Biden’s National Finance Committee that he was stepping down from his fundraising efforts after Biden endorsed Harris.

“If she is nominated, Mar a Lago will have a big party that night,” he added.

Pro-Trump super PAC spent $30 million on ads attacking Biden

The pro-Trump super PAC Make America Great Again has spent $30 million on ads attacking President Joe Biden this election cycle, according to Federal Election Commission records.

The super PAC also spent $18 million supporting former President Donald Trump.

It is unclear exactly how much the Trump campaign, which is a separate entity from the super PAC, spent on ads specifically attacking Biden, as the campaign does not disclose that information.

The Trump campaign has placed television ads sparingly since the primary season.

Former Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Donna Brazile told ABC News’ David Muir Sunday night that Joe Manchin, the independent senator from West Virginia, had reached out to the press to “inquire about the news” that President Joe Biden was withdrawing from the presidential race.

Two sources told ABC News earlier Sunday that Manchin was considering re-registering as a Democrat to run against Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidential nomination.

In the interview, Brazile also said the DNC has committed to holding a virtual roll call that will end on August 7, more than a week before the convention begins.
