Inglewood, California (AP) – Two employees of a technical college in southern California were killed on Friday on campus and taken to hospital in an incident that the authorities attributed to violence at work.
The shooting took place around 4 p.m. in an office in the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology Campus in Inglewood, where mayor James Butts said that the suspect would be a former employee.
An aerial television video showed a strong police presence outside the city campus, which led to Los Angeles in the southwest.
One of the victims was in critical condition, said Butts. The fire service of the County of Los Angeles confirmed on the social platform X that two people had been taken to the hospital.
One person was placed in police custody after initially left the scene, said Butts.
The Los Angeles Police Service said the police have held a male subject of a car corresponding to the description of a vehicle linked to the shooting, which had been sent to local law organizations by the Inglewood police service. Inglewood police did not immediately respond to a request for information.
The school was locked for at least an hour after filming.
Chris Becker, president and chief administrator of the campus, told Kabc-TV that the campus was regularly patrolled and, as a aviation school, security is one of its main objectives.
“It’s a peaceful campus,” said Becker. “It is a beautiful community of students and teachers and staff.”
The Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology offers campuses across the country. The location of Inglewood of the college, about one mile (about 1.5 kilometers) from Los Angeles International Airport, welcomes 500 students and offers training programs focused on aviation maintenance technology, according to its website.
