2 students shot dead in Nashville high school cafeteria, suspected shooter no longer poses threat

Two students were shot to death in a Nashville high school cafeteria Wednesday and the suspected shooter is “no longer a threat,” officials said.

Police responded to a call about a shooting at Antioch High School at 11:11 a.m. CT, Nashville Metropolitan Police told NBC News.

The suspected shooter suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Metro Nashville Public Schools said the person no longer poses a threat in a statement, but did not provide additional details.

“We will gather students in the auditorium and provide information about reunification as soon as possible,” the district said. “This is a crime scene and an active investigation.”

The students were being transported by bus to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital “while being released from the scene by Metro Police,” the district said in a Facebook update.

“We are asking parents to come to the Ascension Saint Thomas reunification site. Please do not come to Antioch High School,” officials said.

The conditions of the two students who were shot, as well as that of the suspected shooter, were not immediately available.

Tennessee State Troopers, State Homeland Security Special Agents and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are assisting.

Antioch High School is on lockdown while police investigate, the district said.
