Two men were found guilty of having approached the beloved of the Sycamore Gaphore Gaping Tree in 2023, in what the prosecutors called a “agonizing mission” which shocked the nation.
Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, denied having killed the tree, but the two were sentenced on Friday for criminal damage.
The tree, a famous monument which was held near the Hadrian wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the north of England, was found illegally reduced on September 28, 2023.
Prosecutor Richard Wright told Newcastle Crown runs during the trial that the two friends went to the neighboring city of Carlisle and had committed “the act of deliberate and insane criminal damage”, spinning the Felling on a mobile phone.
The prosecutor said that Mr. Graham had kept a corner of the tree of the tree as a trophy, and that the messages between him and Mr. Carruthers showed them “revel” in international media coverage after the discovery of the tree. They will be sentenced on July 15.
The tree, which has been held for more than 100 years in a picturesque plunge between two hills, was a long time a marker and a memory manufacturer for British inhabitants and tourists around the world. He also appeared in the 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”.
Wright said that the tree, which had been planted in the late 1800s, was cut with a chain saw in minutes on September 27, 2023.
The jurors have shown that images of the tree shot down under the cover of darkness, which was taken on Mr. Graham’s mobile phone, have shown. The phone also contained photographs of a wooden corner next to a chain saw in the trunk of its Range Rover.
