2 killed in wrong-way crash on south I-5 in Chula Vista; lanes closed
Two drivers were killed early Wednesday in a wrong-way collision on southbound Interstate 5 in Chula Vista, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Motorists reported seeing a speeding driver heading north on the southbound highway on the expressway starting at the border just after 3:20 a.m., the CHP said in its online log.
The driver collided head-on with another vehicle just north of Palomar Street, the CHP said. This car caught fire.
Both drivers were killed, CHP Officer Salvador Castro said.
As of 7:30 a.m., all southbound lanes remained closed and traffic was being diverted off the highway at J Street, Castro said. Morning commuters were finding speeds in the single digits from the Route 54 National Connector.
