Two people were killed in a fire at an apartment building in Vernon Hills early Sunday morning, officials said.
Firefighters said firefighters responded to a fire alarm for a multi-unit apartment building around 3:15 a.m. in the 900 block of South Shorewood Yard.
As crews began to respond to the scene, a 911 call received by first responders revealed that people may have been trapped inside, officials said.
Upon arrival, firefighters began putting out the fire and searching for people when two adults were inside.
One of the people was pronounced dead at the scene while the other person was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center where she later died. The identity of the deceased is currently unknown.
Fire officials said the building was currently uninhabitable and acknowledged that the Red Cross was working to help displaced people, although it was unclear how many residents were displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and there is currently no further information.
