The bodies of two people were discovered in the landing gear of a JetBlue plane that departed JFK Airport and landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida late Monday night, officials said.
Paramedics pronounced the individuals dead shortly after authorities responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m., according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office in Fort Lauderdale.
The bodies were found during a routine post-flight maintenance inspection, JetBlue said in a statement Tuesday. The airline added that the incident did not involve its flight crew or the operation of the plane.
The identities of the individuals and how they accessed the plane remain under investigation, according to JetBlue. The Broward County medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death as the local sheriff’s office continues its investigation.
Both the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees JFK Airport, and the Federal Aviation Administration referred inquiries about the incident to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
