The 17-year-old boy was arraigned Friday on child endangerment charges and held in a juvenile correctional facility.
A 17-year-old is facing charges after a 2-month-old baby was found unresponsive and later died in Newport, R.I., last week, police said.
Newport police responded to Festival Field Housing Development on Girard Avenue just before 11 p.m. Thursday evening.
Police said first responders took life-saving measures before transporting the child to Newport Hospital. The 2-month-old boy died there, Newport police said. The cause of the child’s death has not been released.
Police announced Friday morning that the 17-year-old would face criminal charges in connection with the child’s death.
An unruly crowd also formed at the scene and a physical altercation broke out, police said. Newport police responded and one officer was punched in the face, they said. No one was arrested at the scene.
