163 Democrats voted to protect Mike Johnson from MTG’s ouster bid

  • MTG’s attempt to oust President Mike Johnson failed, thanks in large part to Democrats.
  • Democratic leaders had previously said they would oppose his efforts to avoid chaos.
  • Nonetheless, many Democrats – mostly progressives – did not vote to save Johnson.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has survived efforts to oust him as speaker — thanks in large part to the support of House Democrats.

On Wednesday, the House voted to file Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s motion to overturn, with a majority of Republicans and Democrats voting in favor.

Overall, the vote total was 359-43, with seven Democrats voting “present.”

The vote was a surprise: Greene had apparently backed down from the threat on Tuesday, only to make a surprise attempt to oust Johnson on Thursday.

Greene’s effort was long expected to fail after House Democratic leaders announced they would vote to table her motion to overturn.

While most Democrats sided with their leaders, several did not, arguing that Johnson’s policy line should not be asserted and that their party should have obtained more concessions in exchange.

“It’s important to send a very clear message that Mike Johnson is an extremist,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York told reporters Tuesday. “It’s not an easy decision.”

It’s unclear whether Greene will continue to force votes to oust Johnson.

This story will be updated with a complete list when it becomes available through the Clerk of the House.
