The city cited 16 businesses, including 10 restaurants, for violating Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s order requiring certain establishments to check whether customers have been vaccinated.

Last month, Lightfoot announced that patrons of restaurants, bars and gyms would be required to show proof of vaccination before eating, drinking and exercising indoors.

Between Jan. 3, the day the order went into effect, and Wednesday, the Chicago Department of Commerce and Consumer Protection issued a total of 32 citations to 16 companies for non-compliance.

Companies accused of violating the mayor’s order can be issued two citations for flouting BACP and Chicago Department of Public Health requirements. While each violation could potentially trigger a fine of between $ 100 and $ 10,000, some businesses could also be subject to closure, depending on the city code and by-law.

A BACP press release did not detail the quotes but named the businesses that were sounded, including 10 restaurants and six sports or recreational facilities.
