Although investigators requested custody of the accused for 14 days, the court granted custody for only five days. In requesting his custody, investigators submitted 15 reasons to the court, as follows:

Survey on assistance for irregular entry and stay: Investigators are probing whether anyone helped the accused illegally enter India from Bangladesh and maintain his illegal stay.

Accommodation and Support Survey: Investigators are aiming to ascertain whether anyone harbored the accused during his illegal stay in India.

Investigation into date of entry and duration of irregular stay: Investigators must determine the exact date the accused entered India and the duration of his illegal stay.

Acquisition of weapons: Investigators must determine where the accused obtained the sharp weapon used in the crime and recover it.

Investigation of accomplices: Investigators are looking to determine whether the accused had accomplices in the commission of the crime.

Determination of motive: Investigators must obtain information about the accused’s exact motive for committing the crime.

Investigation of a previous criminal record: Investigators are looking into whether the accused has a criminal record in India, Bangladesh or any other country.

Criminal Record Investigation in Bangladesh: Investigators must determine whether the accused committed crimes in Bangladesh that led him to flee the country and change his identity to hide from Indian authorities.

Investigation of other illegal entries and connections: Investigators must determine whether other people, like the accused, have entered India illegally from Bangladesh, Pakistan or other countries, or whether the accused is in contact with such people.

Police said earlier today that after being arrested in Thane on Saturday evening, the accused allegedly admitted the crimesaying: “Ha maine hi kiya (Yes, I did).

They also said he was sleep in dense mangroves in Thane when he was arrested by the police on Saturday evening during a search conducted by a police team of nearly 100 people in the area.
