Thessaloniki, Greece (AP) – Another series of unmarked tombs – that containing 14 people from the era of the Civil War of Greece – were unearthed in a park in a suburbs near the Greek city north of Thessaloniki, local officials announced on Saturday.
As in the previous tight group of unmarked funeral tanks excavated earlier this year In Neapolis-Sykies, the bodies belong to prisoners detained in a neighboring Byzantine fortress. The alleged prisoners, communists and sympathizers were executed between 1946 and 1953, according to historians.
The castle of Yedi Kule, also known by his Greek name, Eptapyrgio (“seven towers”) was a prison where the Communist sympathizers were tortured and executed during the civil war of 1946-1949 in Greece and immediately after.
The funeral pits were discovered on the site of a municipal park undergoing a renovation, including the installation of new benches. The tombs were not far below the surface, the Park project supervisor told the Park project, told the Associated Press.
The renovation project is currently not a priority for local mayor Simos Daniilidis. “We insisted on continuing the excavation for the graves,” he said. Relatives of the executed have claimed DNA tests to be carried out to determine the identity of the bodies found. The tests have not yet started.
