12-year-old faced ‘harm and torment’ from father and girlfriend before dying, authorities say

A 12-year-old girl has died after authorities say she was subjected to months of torment. Today, two people were arrested.

On May 4, Rendell Hoagland, 52, reported to 911 that his 12-year-old daughter, Malinda Hoagland, was unconscious and unresponsive, Chester County Prosecutor Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said during a press conference broadcast on May 7. WPVI.

“It’s shocking, they found a 12-year-old girl who was broken and barely alive,” de Barrena-Sarobe said.

Malinda was taken to the hospital, where medical staff found her covered in bruises, de Barrena-Sarobe said. She had a half-dozen broken bones, her organs were failing and she weighed 50 pounds, de Barrena-Sarobe said.

Malinda died while being treated.

Through their investigation, de Barrena-Sarobe said authorities discovered that Hoagland and his girlfriend Cindy Warren had subjected Malinda to “harm and torment that no child should ever have to endure, and they done for months.”

De Barrena-Sarobe said Malinda was removed from her middle school in late November or early December and placed in an online home school program. He said that even though Malinda had to appear on camera for school, it was impossible for anyone to know what was happening to her.

As authorities continued their investigation, they discovered a cell phone used by Hoagland and Warren with dozens of videos showing Malinda being abused over the course of months, de Barrena-Sarobe said. In some videos, Malinda’s ankles could be seen chained to furniture and she could be heard being berated, according to de Barrena-Sarobe.

She was also forced to perform intense physical exercises while chained as punishment, de Barrena-Sarobe said. In other cases, he was denied food for days as punishment, de Barrena-Sarobe said. She had a room, but she was sometimes chained in the basement, he said.

“I think we’ve all been wondering over the last few days, when was the last time Malinda was loved. So it’s a horrible thing to think about,” de Barrena-Sarobe said.

De Barrena-Sarobe said that after Malinda was removed from her school, she had very limited access to the outside world.

Another 9-year-old child also resided in the home, but was “treated very well” and unharmed, de Barrena-Sarobe said. He added that the house was also in good condition.

“There are no logical answers,” he said. “It’s a reminder that there is evil in this world.”

Hoagland and Warren are charged with attempted murder and both were arrested May 7 and given $1 million cash bail. De Barrena-Sarobe said authorities were waiting to review the medical reports, at which point they would decide whether to charge the two men with murder.

Additionally, both men are charged with aggravated assault of a child, kidnapping and other charges.

Attorney information for Hoagland and Warren was not available in court records.
