10-year-old boy fighting for life after getting too hot on South Mountain

PHOENIX (AZ family) — A 10-year-old boy is in extremely critical condition after being rescued from South Mountain in Phoenix on Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to the Mormon Trailhead near 24th and Baseline around 2 p.m. because the boy was too hot.

Firefighters said they found the boy about a mile from the trailhead with adults, possibly family members.

Video captured by our Arizona’s Family news helicopter showed firefighters performing chest compressions on the boy on the trail.

Crews placed the victim in a basket and a Phoenix Fire Department helicopter pilot flew him down the mountain.

He was then loaded into an ambulance and taken to hospital.

Firefighters say reports indicate the boy had been on the trail for several hours, possibly since mid-morning before crews were called.

Phoenix Fire says it appears the boy and his family are from out of town.

The maximum temperature forecast in Phoenix for Tuesday was 113 degrees. However, the National Weather Service has not issued an extreme heat warning or watch.

“We have a lot of great hiking trails here in the city of Phoenix and we want people to feel encouraged to use them early in the morning or late in the evening. Avoid the sun at all costs. Seek shade, stay hydrated and limit your exposure as much as possible,” said Phoenix Fire Captain Shaun Dubios.

Phoenix police are currently investigating.
